Annual Fort McMurray Half Marathon gains momentum as the Fort McMurray Marathon in 2018

(Fort McMurray, AB, March 28, 2018) – Building on the continued success of the annual Fort McMurray Half Marathon, the event’s Organizing Committee is thrilled to announce, through a partnership between the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRCWB) and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), this community event will launch in 2018 as the Fort McMurray Marathon, with a full 42.2km marathon race distance.

This year the Fort McMurray Marathon will take place on Sunday, September 16th. Marathon participants, volunteers and spectators alike will descend on MacDonald Island Park for a race day full of festivities including music, food, awards and family fun. Over the past five years, this popular event has received tremendous support with a growing base of dedicated runners helping pave the way to a full marathon addition.

“Part of the continued success of this event has been its ability to attract runners with a wide variety of athletic abilities, and as we’ve grown together, the support of our local running community has been critical to moving toward our long-term vision for this event.” explained Kelsey Stefanizyn, Fort McMurray Marathon Committee Chair. “This strong base paired with the support of our corporate partners, presents an opportunity to pursue our vision of putting Fort McMurray on the race map and attracting new runners from other communities across Canada!”

Early Bird registration will be available online on Monday, April 2nd at 10am MST and runners will have the option to register for one of six race distances, including a full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1km), 10km, 5km, 3km and a kid’s fun run.  There will be limited spots available for race registrations, therefore early registration is encouraged to reserve your spot to participate!
